Kuwaiti Breakfast Staple: Chai Haleeb!

This one’s for my non-Kuwaiti readers! I highly doubt there there is a Kuwaiti woman out there who doesn’t know how to make this traditional drink but I’m sure some of the younger Kuwaiti girls want to learn it.. It’s basically tea infused milk..

Ingredients (for two):

  • 3 cups of milk
  • 7 cardamom pods
  • 1 small piece of cinnamon
  • 3-4 tsp loose “Lipton” tea

Measure out the milk in the same cup you will use to serve the tea.

Add the tea.

Crush the cardamom by pestle and mortar or by using an electric spice grinder.

Now add the cinnamon..

Cover and let simmer for 15-20 minutes on a low heat. Your house will smell of cardamom!

While it’s simmering, prepare the pot or thermos.. Pour boiling water into the pot to heat it up.

Pour out the water and strain the milk into the pot.

This drink is traditionally served with dried cake. Enjoy!
